Wands of ball lightning are wands that, when "z"apped, fire a bolt of lightning in any of the eight directions (instead of creating a lightning ball as the name would suggest). The player cannot select the direction of the bolt (in contrast with almost all other offensive wands). Such feature in conjunction with bouncing nature of lightning bolts makes these wands highly dangerous to use in small rooms/corridors. Direct results of zapping a wand of ball lightning for the PC may include significant amounts of damage and item destruction.
Wands of ball lightning are made of wood and weigh 4 stones. Therefore, zapping 4s wands should be done with precautions. Material-based identification can be used to determine the material of an unidentified wand.
These wands have a range of 16/8/6 for B/U/C respectively. An additional 1 range is added for every 5 character levels.
The absence of control over bolt direction makes wands of ball lightning more dangerous than useful in most cases. In the best case scenario, the PC will damage his/her target and avoid the bolt himself/herself; in the worst case scenario, the opposite results will be achieved. However, in rare cases, wands of ball lightning may still save the PC in a life-threatening encounter.
