Vanquisher ( ( )
Item Type Melee weapon
Artifact? Yes
Weight 300s
Danger Level Unknown
Material Eternium

The silvery two-handed sword "Vanquisher" is a non-guaranteed artifact. It appears as a silvery two-handed sword when unidentified.

Vanquisher is most notable for having seven slaying powers, meaning it is guaranteed to land a critical hit on any monster except animals, insects, or plants. Killing monsters with Vanquisher often yields the message "You hit the --foo-- <...> and vanquish him/her/it".

Vanquisher is one of the many weapons that finds itself in the two-handed artifacts debate: it makes an exceptionally powerful melee weapon, but incurs a very worrying DV loss both directly and through its inability to be used with a shield. Leaving this aside, though, Vanquisher is often regarded as one of the best weapons in the game. Its guaranteed critical hits on most monsters in the game well makes up for the fact that it is not as powerful as some other artifacts such as Grod, Death's Blade or the Hammer of the gods.

Guaranteed/Common sources[]

It is a possible crowning gift for Fighters, Barbarians and Necromancers. It can also be granted as a precrowning gift or a reward for making use of a potion of uselessness; generated in a surge of power or greater vault; or generated as random loot (albeit very rarely).
