The unpick axe is an artifact pick axe found in Rolf's fortress. When wielded it grants a +10 bonus to Toughness, resistance to poison, immunity to fire, confusion resistance, and immunity to disease.

In addition to the normal functions of a pick axe, it is able to create walls. Using it on an adjacent square that contains only a single rock will create a wall. It's not possible to create walls on top of traps, forges, altars, bee hives, ant hills, water, magma, herbs, trees, statues, or pools. It is possible to create wall on top of bridges, special wilderness terrain, and open doors. Creating a wall with the unpick axe will sometimes drain a point of Mana. Digging an unpick-axe-created wall will produce a normal floor square (eligible for door/trap creation, herbs, and webbing), regardless of the original terrain of the square.


Although it is not of much use as a weapon, it grants major bonuses while equipped, making it quite handy for non-melee characters. Its unique ability to create walls also has some practical applications, such as walling in shopkeepers, walling off monsters that are capable of smashing doors, or forcing monsters to take particular routes. When used as a normal pick axe, it is unbreakable due to being an artifact, thereby eliminating any need to repair or stockpile ordinary pick axes.
