Thieves picks can be used to lock or unlock doors using the Pick locks skill. Locking can be performed on an open door, closing it in the process.

Cursed picks can sometimes make doors trapped. Unlocking trapped doors with thieves picks seems to always activate traps.

The presence of thieves picks also increases success of Disarm traps skill by ~30% depending on B/U/C status.


There are plenty of ways to open, bypass or destroy a locked door without using thieves picks. However, thieves picks are uniquely valuable for their ability to lock any door, and particularly for their ability to close and lock a door in a single action which can only otherwise be achieved via the Magic Lock spell. This can be quite useful for trapping a pursuing monster, or at least slowing it down.

Guaranteed/Common sources[]

They can be obtained in the same manner as all generic loot. A set can be found in the eastern side of the first level of the Pyramid, along with a climbing set and pick axe.

If the PC does not have a set, is a Thief or Assassin, and is not lawful, Yergius will offer to sell them thieves picks at a price of (500 * character level) gold pieces.
