I hope that the information that I put here isn't contentious; I tried to stay as close to the manual as possible, but there is a little bit of bias involved with the class suggestions, because I thought that the manual alone didn't give a good rundown on what's popular in the newsgroup. Feel free to edit to your heart's content, if you disagree with my class suggestions. Or, hell, write better descriptions. I'm tired of working on this page. It took way too long to write. rendorax 08:30, November 11, 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure how much I want to get into changing the class recommendations since there are a lot of different opinions on what is good, but there are a few things that I found a bit surprising that I thought I'd ask about...
- Why troll beastfighter? While they're great until around level 10, their slow levelling is a huge detriment to this class. Once the other races gain a couple levels or catch up in strength, troll beastfighters are really quite poor. For trolls, I find it surprising that healer, monk, and assassin aren't mentioned. I would say all three of those are better than either bf or barb for trolls.
- High elf monk feels like a really weird choice for me, but I don't really like elves, so maybe this is just something I'm missing. A lot of people like high elf weaponsmiths, from what I've heard.
- Dwarves are poor casters? Dwarf priests and wizards are awesome. Sure you might get the odd one with bad Le, but starting a wizard with 20 To is amazing.
- Gnomes and hurthlings are both excellent bards, since their extra talent gives them a guaranteed heir gift. They also make playable thieves for the same reason (although the gift isn't guaranteed, gnomes at least get it the majority of the time).
I don't really see any reason to make significant changes to this though. On the individual racial pages, we can certainly go into detail on which classes work and why. JellySlayer 21:39, November 11, 2009 (UTC)
As far as I'm aware the problem with dwarven wizard is less Learning (they actually have among the best Learning scores) and more (in a sense) Mana. Which is easily fixed, making dwarven wizards quite viable. 126.96.36.199 23:58, November 11, 2009 (UTC) (Silfir)
The Guidebook suggests Troll Barbarians and Beastfighters, and they've been staples of the newsgroup for over ten years. But everyone has their favorites. I haven't kept up on what's going on in the newsgroup (or official forums, to which I just signed up) for a while, though, so I could be speaking as a relic of the past. As for dwarves, they have atrocious PP regeneration, very low mana, and average learning, and are thus a poor fit for any pure spellcaster, in my opinion. A troll wizard, though a bit on the novelty side, can be fun, because you end up swatting most irritants with your huge club, rather than casting spells. Anyways, this page took hours to write, because I was agonizing over class suggestions, and I'm totally done with that. I refuse to think any further about it, unless I reward myself with forbidden pleasures. rendorax 04:16, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
