Swimming is a skill which governs a PC's ability to safely cross water. Though it may seem like a basic skill, only a few races and a small number of classes (mainly fighting ones) start with it.

Manual info

This skill enables you to traverse bodies of water. To fail an attempt to swim can be very deadly nonetheless.

Basics

The higher a PC's Swimming skill, the more chance they have of successfully swimming in water ("You easily swim in the water") and the less damage they take from unsuccessful attempts ("You are drowning!"). Being burdened or worse makes the PC more likely to drown. Swimming does not prevent drowning in the Water Dragon Cave.

Advanced uses

The PC's ability at swimming also determines the energy cost to move across water — the usual cost for doing so is 1500, which is reduced to 1250 for PCs with a skill level of 50 or higher in this skill.

If the PC is wearing an amulet of free action, they will only require 1000 energy points to swim regardless of their ability with this skill.

Obtaining

Race: Human, Drakeling, Ratling.
Class: Barbarians, Beastfighters, Druids, Elementalists, Fighters, Paladins, Rangers.

Additionally, the swimming skill can be obtained by giving 2 potions (or 1 blessed potion) of carrot juice to Blup in Terinyo.

Training

Swimming is trained by being in water. Of course, spending too long in water can be very risky for PCs with very low scores in swimming. Care must also be taken to avoid rusting iron items and drenching scrolls.
