The staff of the archmagi is a random artifact. It has stats of (+5, 5d2+2) [+9, +0], adds +10 to Mana and grants resistance to acid, sleep and confusion attacks. When zapped, the staff allows the PC to cast an Improved Fireball. The fireball has a base cost of 90 PP, which is affected by spellcasting cost reductions, as well as the PC's Improved Fireball spell knowledge. Zapping the staff will cost 180 PP for PCs that don't know the spell and have no spell cost reductions. Like the spell, it costs more PP the further away it is targeted.

Staff of the archmagi benefits from the same recharge time reductions as magic staves. Unlike normal magic staves, it is not drained by the Mana battery corruption.


The substantial Mana bonus will increase maximum PP as well as provide increased resistance to certain attacks. On the other hand, it has poor damage and will usually result in lower DV as it prevents the use of a shield. The fireball effect is not terribly useful for casters, as it costs at least three times as much as casting the spell normally, unless the caster is already out of PP. Non-casters may find it somewhat more useful for the active effect, both for the fireball and for the resulting Mana training.

It can be generated in the same manner as all random artifacts, including precrowning and several methods of loot generation. It is a possible crowning gift for Elementalists, Necromancers and Wizards.
