Staff of levitation ( ( )
Item Type Melee weapon
Artifact? No
Weight 40s
Danger Level Unknown
Material Wood

Staff of levitation is a melee weapon and one of the magic staves. If zapped while wielded, levitation is granted to the PC for a few turns. If zapped while not wielded, a message is displayed ("For a brief moment you hover in the air!") and nothing else happens, although if the PC then wields the staff before its effect has worn off, levitation will be granted.

The levitation granted by the staff lasts for around 100/25/5 turns depending on B/U/C status. There is no warning of when the effect is about to end.

While levitating, PCs ignore the effects of difficult terrain, become immune to pit and alarm traps, and can move over water and magma without drowning.

The levitation granted by the staff continues to apply while navigating the wilderness map, and can be used to cross water tiles. As it is not possible to zap the staff while navigating the wilderness map, the PC must first enter a location to do so (any empty wilderness tile will suffice) - ideally one that is adjacent to the water being crossed, due to the limited duration of the effect.

The staff has typical stats of (+0, 1d10). As with all of the magic staves, it can be generated with prefixes and suffixes.

Staves of levitation are moderately useful for traversing water, although their variable duration makes them somewhat risky to rely on, especially if they are not blessed.
