The silver key is an artifact in ADOM. In ADOM v 1.1.1 and some earlier versions, the artifact can only be generated by crowning.

The silver key opens or locks any door safely, even if it is cursed. As of v. 1.2.0, when used on an empty square it will create a locked door there in exchange for half the PC's maximum PP (rounded down). Of course, if the PC does not have enough PP then it will do nothing in this case. It can be used to open the dwarven portal at the bottom of the sinister dungeon.

The silver key is currently the only randomly-generated artifact tool in ADOM (the only other artifacts that are classified as tools at all being the si and the Chaos Orbs).

Desirability

PCs might make some occasional use of it, such as locking away troublesome breeders or just trying to prevent exploding rune traps from destroying their equipment. Its newer ability to create locked and trapped door is also useful (albeit costly) for blocking certain monsters, for safe escape or other tactical uses. At least these doors can't hinder the PC, as the key solves the 'problem' it creates.

Guaranteed/Common sources

It is a possible crowning gift for Thieves.

As of v. 1.2.0 it can also be granted as a precrowning gift or a reward for making use of a potion of uselessness; generated in a surge of power or greater vault; or generated as random loot (albeit very rarely).
