Scroll of protection ( ? )
Item Type Scroll
Artifact? No
Weight 2s
Danger Level 1
Material Paper

Scrolls of protection may modify the PV of an equipped non-artifact item when read, depending on the B/U/C status of the scroll:

  • Cursed scrolls have a chance to decrease PV by 1.
  • Uncursed scrolls have a chance to increase PV by 1.
  • Blessed scrolls have a chance to increase PV by 1-3.

The scroll will target the first equipped item from the following list: body armor, helmet, cloak, boots, gauntlets, girdle, bracers. For example, if the player wants to improve an equipped pair of bracers, they should remove body armor, helmet, cloak, boots, gauntlets and girdle prior to reading the scroll.

If a scroll fails to modify PV, the scroll simply "turns into gray ash". Blessed and uncursed scrolls are less likely to work the higher the item's PV; cursed scrolls are less likely to work the lower the item's PV. The scroll will also turn to gray ash if the PC is not wearing any suitable items when the scroll is read, e.g. if the PC is wearing only artifact items, or no items at all.

Desirability[]

Quite useful to all PCs. Scrolls of protection are the only way to improve the PV of nonmetallic items such as seven league boots, and can also serve as a more convenient alternative to Smithing for improvement of metallic items.

Guaranteed/Common sources[]

They can be obtained in the same manner as all generic loot.
