Scrolls of item destruction are scrolls that, when read, destroy a random item owned by the PC. (S)he must own at least 4 items total (counting those equipped and in the backpack) for this to work.
Since artifacts cannot be destroyed, they will instead be cursed by the scroll.
Desirability[]
They are not very useful. It is possible, if you have one cursed item equipped you want to get rid of, to just keep wearing that one item, wield gold pieces in both hands and put one in the missile slot (don't try this in a location with monsters around), then read the scrolls for a 25% shot at getting rid of the damn thing (or 75% shot at losing 1gp). If you are stuck with four or more cursed items, you are guaranteed a reduction of your troubles.
