Save Yrrigs is a quest given by Rynt in Terinyo.

Requirements[]

This quest is mutually exclusive with Guth'Alaks' quest to Kill Keethrax. If you take one of the two, you will not be able to take the other.

Description and walkthrough[]

After receiving the quest, the player must go to the Village Dungeon, south-east of Terinyo. There, he must find and either save or kill Yrrigs, who has been corrupted by the powers of chaos and has gone insane.

The second option is easier. Simply descend to the bottom level of the dungeon (VD:7), find Yrrigs, and kill him in your preferred manner. He is not easy to kill for a lower level character, but if you've spent a bit of time exploring each level of the dungeon and gaining experience, it should be possible. Be aware that VD:7 is rather more dangerous than the rest of this otherwise beginner-friendly dungeon (as far as such a thing is possible in ADOM).

If you choose to save him, you must lure him back to level four of the dungeon, where there is a healer named Jharod. Simply get Yrrigs to stand next to Jharod - he will be healed by him, drop his items and depart for the village. This sounds easier to do than it is. Unless the player is faster than him (speed above 100 or the Long Stride talent) and/or wears decent amounts of armor (about 5 PV, the more, the better), Yrrigs is quite likely to do a large amount of damage to them on the trip. This can be alleviated by wielding two shields and setting your tactics setting to Coward. Also, the player may encounter other hostile creatures, blocking his way and potentially trapping him. If that happens, you will need to either out-maneuver them (if they are in a room) or kill them (if they are in a tunnel), always with the rather hard-hitting Yrrigs in the back.

If you can lose Yrrigs for a while in any given level, use that time to move towards the stairs. He will catch up with you soon enough, and even if he got stuck somewhere or has lost the trail of the player, finding him again can wait until the way to the stairs is cleared.

Reward[]

If you save Yrrigs, there are many rewards.

  • He will leave you a blessed manual of bridge building, cursed oil of rust removal and a blessed hatchet when he is cured. If he is killed, he will still drop the manual and the hatchet, but they will be uncursed; he will not drop the oil.
  • Jharod will be willing to teach Neutral or Lawful players the Healing skill, if they do not already know it. If they do know it, he will improve their skill advancement dice in it and give the player a stethoscope. If they already have a skill level of 100, he will give them a potion of ultra healing.
  • If Yrrigs is cured, the village Elder, Rynt, will ask Munxip the Merchant to lower his prices.
  • If he is saved, Yrrigs will be available in Terinyo to teach the player bridge building and offer additional training for free.

Some experienced players tend to skip this quest, only creating the dungeon to get access to the rather safe first levels and the healer nearby, who can save the life of a weak early game PC. Healing can be obtained without saving Yrrigs - Jharod can be satisfied with other deeds of mercy, and Hotzenplotz will reward you with the services of another teacher as a reward for the quest to kill Jharod himself. Some players will prefer to keep Jharod alive, however, to retain access to an infinite supply of potions of ultra healing.
