Rocks are missiles that can be either thrown or used in a Sling. They are not generated with prefixes or suffixes, with the exception of the archer heir gifts for hurthlings and trolls.
Desirability[]
They are the single most common type of missile in the game, and contrary to arrows and quarrels they can be thrown if the player does not have a sling. While the lack of slaying properties on any kind of rock is disheartening, the sheer number of rocks available in any game makes achieving a high weapon skill in either Thrown rocks and clubs or Slings a trivial task.
Many players will use rocks in the early game if they did not start out with ranged weaponry, and some will continue using rocks exclusively. While slaying ammunition makes it tempting to switch to bows or crossbows later, games have been won with a very high level in thrown rocks alone. This is an especially viable option for hurthlings, who start out with a very good Thrown Rocks and Clubs skill and need only two-thirds as many marks to increase it further.
Trolls can sacrifice rocks for small amounts of piety
Guaranteed/Common sources[]
Generic loot. A large number are generated on the ground in Goblin Camp. They are used as missiles by goblin rockthrowers, ogres, various giants and many others. After Mining (or kicking if PC is a Monk) out walls it is possible to find a pile of rocks as well, regardless if this is performed by the player or wandering dwarves, or giant ants. They are also frequently left behind when the player opens a tension room. Casting the Earthquake spell or kicking down statues (not to be confused with player statues which can have certain effects if kicked) will also generate rocks.
