Rings of doom confer a number of negative effects while worn: they grant the cursed and doomed intrinsics, lower DV and PV by 6, and are autocursing.
Desirability[]
Rings of doom easily rank as one of the very worst items in the game, and should generally be avoided at all costs. They are one of the few known items that will get a rank of "terrible" when appraised. There is no fail-safe way of spotting one except by appraising or by magical identification, so the PC should be very careful when trying on unidentified rings.
That said, rings of doom do have at least one potential use: a doomed PC will have a higher rate of wilderness encounters, which can be useful on specific occasions. However, the crown of science would generally be a superior choice for such purposes as it imposes fewer penalties upon the PC.
