Ratling traders can be found on the Arena level of the Caverns of Chaos, where they attempt to sell the player a variety of food for extremely low prices. One or two ratling traders may also be found in the High Mountain Village; if they happen to be friendly towards the player, they will trade just like the Arena ones.

When chatted with, they will offer one of the following foods for sale:

Of these, only cooked lizards and fried bats are worth buying, as the others have extremely low satiation values.

Each trader specializes in one of the above food types. They typically stock between 20 and 60 of their chosen product, although higher figures have been reported (and traders will typically have more stock if their stock is uncursed or cursed - blessed stock seems to number at the low end of the range). Once out of stock, the player must spend some time on the level for them to restock - they will not restock while the player is off the level. Hence, it may be a good idea to immediately buy all desirable food, do some Arena fights (or fully explore the rest of the level) to pass time, then return to the traders to procure more supplies.

As all ratling traders look identical, it is a good idea to name (with the 'n' command) those who have stocks of desirable foods to avoid wasting time.

Monster memory[]

These slim and agile creatures have their regular place on the arena level where there will never be a shortage of customers. You can easily recognize them by their smart blue uniforms and matching caps with a red 'R'. With their twitching whiskers and friendly red eyes, they will invite you to buy some savory snacks from their vendor trays.
