Potions of water are potions that have no effect when drunk in uncursed form. Their main use is to be blessed (by dropping on a co-aligned altar while having a certain amount of piety), then dipping items into them.
When an item is dipped into a blessed potion of water (called a "potion of holy water"), it will become blessed, with a few exceptions (Moon sickle, and other artifacts containing the essence of Chaos and Corruption, will turn the potion of water into a potion of raw chaos instead).
When a scroll is dipped into an uncursed potion of water, the text will be wiped off it thus creating a blank scroll. Dipping an iron item into an uncursed potion will rust it, unless it is rustproof. Items dipped into a cursed potion ("potion of unholy water") become cursed.
Potions of water can have their B/U/C status changed by altars—holy water may be generated by placing potions of water on a friendly altar, and unholy water may be generated by placing potions of water on an unfriendly altar. Furthermore, potions of water will injure undead (if blessed), as well iron golems, if they are thrown at them. In the case of undead, the message is "X seems to be burned by the liquid" and the target is damaged for approximately 20 points of damage.
They are extremely useful to all players since the usage of many items multiplies if they are blessed. For instance, a blessed potion of gain attributes will provide a +1 raise to all stats instead of just one. Blessing cursed items also removes the curse.
While uncursed water rarely finds any use (given that magical writing sets are rare and the player will find blank scrolls in dungeons), some players hold on to any unholy water they can find, in order to obtain cursed potions of invisibility, which act as potions of blindness, or cursed scrolls of repair.
