Pieces of *metal* ore are raw material items that can be used to produce ingots of the corresponding metal via the Smithing skill. Each piece of ore can be used to produce a single item. Level 6+ Weaponsmiths are able to melt multiple pieces of same-metal ore, although typically it is less efficient in terms of net ingot gain.
Desirability[]
They are useful for players who wish to improve their metal-made armor and weaponry. Surprisingly weaponsmiths don't really need ore since they can melt junk armor/weapons into ingots. For further details check Smithing.
Guaranteed/Common Sources[]
Pieces of ore are typically obtained by digging walls (using pick axes, kicking as level 13+ Monks, letting digging monsters use their ability). Note that the ore type distribution follows metal quality (iron ore is the most common, eternium ore — the rarest).
Aside from digging, pieces of ore can be (albeit rarely) generated as common loot.
