Magical writing sets are tools used to create scrolls. The player uses the set, along with a blank scroll, and is given the option to specify a type of scroll to create, which must be one that the PC has identified. Successfully writing a scroll requires the PC to pass a Literacy check, with the difficulty depending in part on the type of scroll chosen and the B/U/C status of the magical writing set and blank scroll. It's not possible to make copies of artifact scrolls, such as scroll of the finder, but otherwise unique scrolls such as the crumpled scroll can be written.

Each set has a limited number of charges and it cannot be recharged; upon the use of the last charge, the set disappears. Blank scrolls can be obtained by dipping unwanted scrolls in plain (uncursed) water.

Certain scrolls drain Mana when successfully scribed. Using a blessed writing set and blank scroll results in the lowest possible Mana cost; with worse status items the Mana cost is increased, even for scrolls that normally don't cost Mana to scribe. Monks never lose Mana when writing scrolls. Wizards, Necromancers, and Priests have reduced Mana costs for writing scrolls. Creating scrolls also costs power points; if the PC doesn't have enough, hit points will be lost instead.

Scroll Standard Necromancer/Priest Wizard Monk

Scroll of education 4 1 0 0
Scroll of item creation 3 0 0 0
Scroll of defense 2 0 0 0

Scroll of increase melee damage 2 0 0 0

Desirability[edit source]

Magical writing sets are highly useful for PCs of some classes—monks in particular and members of magical classes as well. Since they can produce desirable scrolls like corruption removal, protection, and education, they remain useful late in the game.

Guaranteed/Common sources[edit source]

They can be obtained in the same manner as all generic loot. A wish yields 2d2 sets, usually with a total of around 10 charges.
