1.1.1 KPL 12

Large spiders are monsters in ADOM. They are animals that are able to spin webs to trap the PC. They can also be summoned en masse by dark elven spellcasting monsters. Their poisonous attacks can be dangerous to early game PCs; and since many of them are generated by summoners and thus killed in large numbers throughout the game, they will gradually grow stronger throughout the game due to the KPL system. This is a particularly serious issue in ADOM version 1.1.1 and earlier, but was toned down in version 1.2.0 of the game (see this bug report).

Corpse effects[]

Dark elves enjoy eating spiders while PCs of all other races vomit and become poisoned after eating them. All PCs have a high chance of gaining intrinsic poison resistance as well after eating a corpse.

Standard description

These large arachnids stand a couple of feet tall with a leg span of several feet. Like most spiders, they attack with a poisonous bite, waiting for the poison to sufficiently weaken the opponent for storage or consumption. They prefer dark areas and corners from which to surprise passing victims.

Alternate description I

These are rather large and aggressive arachnids with a diameter of about 6 feet. This one is searching carefully for its next meal.

Alternate description II

A giant arachnid blocks your way, and you can study its anatomy much more closely than you desired. The stigmata on the abdomen are as large as human palms, the strong hairy legs barely thinner than your arms and the glinting black eyes the size of walnuts. You try to push past it and nearly stumble into a web of threads like fishing lines, but a lot stickier. The spider edges closer, and as you get a look at the poison-dripping mandibles that could serve as swords for hurthlings, you know that this might turn out to be a fight for your life.
