Intrinsics are properties conferred on the player by worn item (and only stay in effect as long as the corresponding items are equipped) or received permanently from eaten corpse, pool or certain other means. Intrinsics generally provide resistance against certain forms of attack or confer other benefits. A few intrinsics, notably cursing and dooming, are undesirable and are generally removed as soon as possible. Note that the effects of most intrinsics stack — that is, two counts of fire resistance is better than one; two counts of dooming is worse than one.
Also note that items that provide elemental resistances or immunities cannot be destroyed by the corresponding element, even if an item's material usually makes it susceptible to that element (e.g., rings of fire resistances will never burn despite being made of wood).

Elemental resistance[]
All penetrated damage of respective element is divided by (3*r + R + 1), where r is the amount of resistant items that PC have on and R = 6 if intrinsic is received.
Elemental immunity[]
Despite the name, elemental immunity internally divides the damage by ten thousand and presumably rounds down. Under most normal circumstances this reduces incoming damage to zero.[2]
Special cases[]
Class powers[]
Intrinsics received as class powers cannot be removed by pools.
- Beastfighters receive poison resistance upon reaching level 6, stun resistance at level 12.
- Mindcrafters start with teleport control.
- Elementalists receive fire resistance upon reaching level 6, shock resistance at level 12[3] and water breathing at level 25.
- Druids receive shock immunity upon reaching level 40.
- Weaponsmiths receive fire immunity upon reaching level 32.

Hitting a karmic creature in melee downgrades luck-related intrinsics:
- If fate smiles on the PC, it is removed and replaced with lucky intrinsic.
- If fate smiles is not present, but the PC is lucky, lucky intrinsic is removed.
- If the PC doesn't have fate smiles and lucky intrinsics, (s)he receives cursed intrinsic.
- If the PC is cursed and doesn't have any positive luck-related intrinsics, (s)he is doomed.
Note that this effect will only occur on successful hits and not guaranteed to happen 100% of the time. In practice, a special message (Suddenly you think this was a bad idea!) is displayed to indicate that luck intrinsics were downgraded. It is also possible to block this effect from happening using a ring of karmic absorption. The ring will, however, degrade from each effect blocking, getting uncursed from blessed, cursed from uncursed. Finally, cursed rings will disappear if they are activated to block karmic effect.
Reading a scroll of luck or eating a corpse of karmic creature will upgrade luck-related intrinsic. The effect is completely opposite to the described above. Note, however, that scrolls of luck will not remove dooming, but can be used to remove curse and acquire both positive luck intrinsics.
Reading a scroll of ill fate grants cursed intrinsic.
Offering a sacrifice at the altar may affect luck intrinsics in either positive or negative way based on piety level.
- (positive) If the PC reaches the level of piety when You feel inner peace. (You burn with the anticipation of power. for chaotics) message is displayed, he will be granted lucky intrinsic.
- (positive) If the PC reaches the level of piety when You feel very close to -deity- message is displayed, he will be granted lucky and fate smiles intrinsics, as well as have cursed and/or doomed intrinsics removed.
- (negative) If the PC reaches the level of piety when deity is angered enough to destroy all worn equipment, but the PC has no items except possible in backpack, (s)he will receive doomed intrinsic.
It is possible to pray to remove cursed and doomed intrinsics, but this requires significant amounts of piety.
