Holy symbols can be "U"sed in order to raise a players piety with their deity by a single point on odd turns. It is also possible to use one to turn undead if some are near. This consumes piety but does not appear to require the character to be pious.
As of version 1.2.0 holy symbols are made of gold[1] (previously they were iron).
Desirability[]
Piety levels are several thousand points apart, and guaranteed altars exist in Dwarftown, the Borderland Settlement, and elemental temples like the Water Temple. This makes the 1 point piety gain from holy symbols every other turn very inefficient.
They can give very patient early game characters, though, the needed piety for extra prayers. Also, the chance to turn undead can sometimes be the last chance a character has to survive.
Guaranteed/Common sources[]
Holy symbols can be obtained in the same manner as all generic loot. Thrundarr will give the player a holy symbol at the start of the portal quest. Priests and Paladins start the game with a holy symbol.
