Hand crossbows are a type of missile weapon in ADOM. They train and benefit from Crossbows weapon skill and can only be used to shoot dark elven or black hurthling quarrels.
Desirability[]
Hand crossbows are typically an inferior choice for a missile weapon due to their low innate stats and poor quality of the ammunition.
The only exception for this is the Quickling Tree—strict entrance rules will likely cause the PC to abandon his/her missile weapon in favor of more useful items, while both hand crossbows and ammunition for it can be obtained inside the location in abundance.

They can be obtained in the same manner as all generic loot.
Hand crossbows are frequently dropped by quickling lords, quickling kings, pixie archers, black hurthlings and dark elven archers.
Dark Elven Archers, Fighters, Healers, Merchants, Paladins and Thieves start the game with a hand crossbow and some ammunition for it.
