Hammerhead ( ( )
Item Type Melee weapon
Artifact? Yes
Weight 90s
Danger Level Unknown
Material Nonmetallic

Hammerhead is a random artifact in ADOM. It is an improved pick axe - meaning it can be 'U'sed to dig through stone as well as its use as a melee weapon. Whilst wielded, it increases Toughness and grants resistance to fire and stunning.

In its unidentified form, Hammerhead is a pick axe — meaning that only its unusual weight of 90s easily distinguishes it from regular pick axes.

For many PCs, Hammerhead is mainly desirable for its unlimited potential to dig through walls — as unlike regular pick axes it cannot break, and unlike magical means of digging tunnels it does not require PP or recharging. For this property alone, it is generally very useful and certainly worth holding onto if found. The infinite digging capabilities are also useful for producing mass amounts of ore, which can be melted into ingots for Smithing.

As a one-handed melee weapon, it has a respectable damage potential which is typically on par with many one-handed eternium weapons, but not as impressive as a few one-handed artifacts. Its slight bonuses and resistances tend to be useful enough to justify wielding it until a better weapon is found.

Guaranteed/Common sources[]

Like all random artifacts it can be granted as a precrowning gift or a reward for making use of a potion of uselessness, generated in a surge of power or greater vault, or generated as random loot (albeit very rarely).

Whilst no specific classes can receive it as a crowning gift, any dwarven PC (except Beastfighters and Monks) can be crowned with Hammerhead instead of one of the usual crowning gifts for their class.
