Greater claw bugs are monsters in ADOM. They tend to show up in the later game, and can be found in large abundance in the Bug Temple.

Greater claw bugs are much more dangerous than their lesser counterparts. They are very fast and evasive, can spawn further instances, and can execute a huge number of attacks per turn (the number is quoted as eight for level 1 GCBs; however, this is usually a lot more in practice due to their speed). As with all claw bugs, these attacks are very accurate and always penetrate armor. Taking them on in melee is usually not recommended unless the PC has extreme DV, to-hit and damage; even then, there is a threat of them spawning further instances of themselves and surrounding the PC.

Prior to ADOM v. 1.2.0, greater claw bugs and killer bugs never shrugged off bolts, making magical bolts a very easy way to kill them. Their resistance to bolts was increased in 1.2.0[1], meaning that whilst it is still possible to kill them with ranged magic, there is a risk of failure, which could have nasty consequences for weak PCs relying on bolt spells.

Special abilities

Common stats

Level: 1, DV: 30, PV: 12, Hits: 40, Attacks: 8, Damage: 7-10, Speed: 120.

Corpse effects

Reduces Willpower by 6 points. If PC Willpower is at 1, there is chance of decreasing Willpower potential instead. Increases Dexterity and potential Dexterity by up to 3 combined points. The increase is less likely the higher Dexterity is, with less than a 10% chance of working once Dexterity is 35 or higher. Cannot increase Dexterity higher than 85. Also has a chance to increase speed slightly.

Monster memory

A deadly giant insect that attacks with incredible speed, making full use of its razor-sharp hooked and barbed claws. They are swift and precise, but possess little intelligence or judgement. Known in some areas as "berserker emperor beetles."
