Gorgons are monsters in ADOM that start to appear in the mid game. Whilst they are strong and quite tough, far more worrying is the fact that they can breathe petrification gas — which can affect 2 or 3 squares in front of the beast, and potentially kill anything it hits instantly.
PCs with intrinsic petrification resistance will take no damage at all from gorgon breath; this intrinsic is particularly hard to find, though. If the PC happens to be carrying an amulet of petrification resistance when they see a dark green 'F' approaching, they are highly advised to equip it straight away; this is the only known use for petrification resistance anyway. Failing this, it is possible for the PC to dodge the attack; DV is thought to be a factor in this case, Alertness might also help. PCs can minimize any risks by using ranged attacks well out of the breath attack's range (usually 2 or 3 squares). Since gorgons tend to use their breath rarely in melee range, though, it is still possible for melee-orientated PCs to overcome them before they can unleash their breath of death.

Corpse effects[edit source]
Eating a gorgon will kill the PC instantly, unless (s)he has petrification resistance. Eating a gorgon corpse does not guarantee petrification resistance, though it apparently has a small chance of granting the intrinsic.
A huge and unbelievably ugly beast with horns like a bull and skin covered with iron scales. It makes a strange noise, like a cross between a moo and a screech, and a cloud of black, reeking gas belches forth. A tiny spider on the floor crumples into... a pebble?
