The Ghost Librarian maintains a silent vigil over the stacks in the Sinister Library of Niltrias. As with all librarians, the Ghost Librarian values silence more highly than all other virtues.

The Ghost Librarian will reward the player who respects the library. He will bless the PC in exchange for books or scrolls, but more importantly, he offers a quest with a handsome reward. To earn the quest the PC must have their stealth skill trained to 100. The player must spend at least 2000 turns (there may be some variation in this number, as in some cases it appears to take longer) silent, without 'C'hatting with anything. After that, the player may chat with the librarian, who will bless the player, and offer a quest. The quest is to deliver the weird tome to the Mad Minstrel. Upon receipt, he awards the player with some extra scrolls taking up space on his bookshelf: five cursed scrolls of corruption removal. If chatting with the librarian fails, the player can try again— the turn counter is reset, but the quest is still available. Accepting the quest increases Literacy by around 40 if the PC is already literate, or grants the skill at level 100 if the PC is illiterate.

The player should be careful to ensure the Ghost Librarian's safety. Since the Librarian is non-hostile, the monsters that guard the stacks might potentially attack him. It's a good idea to use a wand of door creation to seal off the library's lobby. Even then, monsters that teleport or smash doors might potentially get in and kill him.

Level: 1, DV: 55, PV: 0, Hits: 125, Speed: 100

Corpse effects[]

The Ghost Librarian is insubstantial and does not leave a corpse.

Monster memory[]

Quiet and unassuming, a veritable ghost in the stacks who knows all within the domain and offers it freely as long as the ritual of silence is respected. This collector and maintainer of books and scrolls seems content in this literary repository.
