Displacer beasts are a type of monster. Whilst they have no special powers, they are notable for extremely high DV, especially compared to other monsters that appear around the early game. Weak PCs are thus better off dealing with them using magic or mindcraft, if such means are available.
Despite their appearance, they are not cats.

Corpse effects[]
Eating a displacer beast forces the PC to teleport, and causes them to become stunned and confused on top of that. Due to the confusion, even if the PC can control teleportation they will still not end up *exactly* where they want to go.
Monster memory[]
A low snarling draws your attention to a dark, cat-like creature moving very quietly. Even though you're sure the beast is still several feet away, the gleaming eyes suddenly seem to be but inches away from your own, and the black tentacles close enough to close on your throat.
