Disarm Trap is a clerical utility spell in ADOM. It allows the caster to remove any trap adjacent to him/her.

Disarm Trap is an arguably useful spell which mainly helps to avoid deaths early on in the game, but loses its desirability relatively quickly as the PC progresses. The fact that the PC must first discover the floor trap and only then (s)he will be able to magically remove it significantly lowers the efficiency of the spell, as with average Dexterity score the PC will rarely trigger known traps. The spell can actually remove a trap if it still undetected, but using it on every tile is practically unfeasible.

Disarm Trap is far better as Knock alternative, as it may be cast on every door as a precaution; doing so will remove the trap if it was actually present.

Disarm Trap will also remove any open pit regardless of how it was created (as a trap or dug by the PC).

Stats[]

Disarm Trap doesn't depend on any attribute due to its fixed effect. Spell proficiency likewise doesn't improve anything except base cost.

Extra

Disarm Trap spell and Disarm traps skill have several differences, most notably the following:

  • The spell doesn't give experience points for successfully removing the trap, while the skill does.
  • The spell cannot be targeted on the PC's location, while the skill can be.
  • The skill cannot remove open pit traps but can remove covered traps, while the spell can remove all pits (even those which were created by the PC).
  • The spell will always successfully remove the trap, while the skill is not 100% reliable.
