Balors are a type of demon in ADOM. They have a corrupting melee attack, immunity to fire, and can teleport. Also, they are able to summon a wide variety of monsters. They commonly drop Scourges.
Balors display more intelligence than most other monsters. They are capable of picking up and using both weapons and healing potions. They also employ teamwork with other balors, actively using teleportation to execute flanking attacks on the PC. A means of frequent teleportation is highly recommended to escape these attacks on D:50.
9 balors are guaranteed to appear in the lowest level of the Caverns of Chaos; presumably to guard the Chaos Gate.

Monster memory[]
An ancient creature of chaos, they appear as enormous humanoids cloaked in fiery shadow or smoke. They are feared opponents whose nature makes them resistant to many magics and who strike with awesome and relentless force. They are feared even among creatures of chaos, sometimes being offered tribute, and so are usually well equipped and prepared to destroy.
Summoned monsters[]
Ascyron did some testing of what monsters a Balor can summon. He wished for several Balors in an empty wilderness square and recorded the results. 61 total summons were recorded, and the following monsters were generated.
- It is quite probable that this isn't a complete list of all possible summons, due to the low sample size. Further testing would be required.
- Also, testing is required on whether DL makes a difference in what monsters a Balor can summon.
- Each summoning resulted in 3-9 monsters, with a typical value of 6, leading to the conclusion that they summon 3d3 monsters.
A Balor on level 2 of the Crumbling Dungeon was able to summon 6 Ancient Red Dragons.
