Improves the PC's efficiency with ranged weapons. More specifically the to-hit bonus, damage, and (at higher point values) the range of missiles.
This skill increases your proficiency with missile weapons. Archers receive a bonus of +1 to hit per 10 points in this score and a bonus of +1 to damage per 20 points in this score. All other classes receive a bonus of +1 to hit per 25 points in this skill and a bonus of +1 to damage per 40 points of skill score. This skill also slightly increases the range of your missile attacks on a successful skill check (which is done automatically whenever you use a missile).
The bonuses the Archery skill provides are rather dismal for non-Archers. At skill level 100, which will require a lot of training, these bonuses reach +4 to-hit and +2 to-damage, roughly comparable to several points of Dexterity. For Archers the situation is somewhat better with the skill providing a total of +10 to-hit and +5 to-damage when mastered completely. Archers also start with the skill trained relatively highly and usually have high training modifiers, allowing them to reach level 100 early in the game.
Finally, the skill gives the PC a chance to successfully hit targets which are beyond (in the red zone as displayed while selecting a target) the normal shooting range (the yellow zone as displayed while selecting a target). While this is typically not a serious advantage when using common ranged weapons (bows, crossbows and possibly slings), as these usually provide sufficient ranges, other missile weapon categories or special items (potions, the Black torc) will benefit slightly more.
Archery skill is also prerequisite for two potent talents:
- Eagle Eye — +3 to-hit and +3 to-damage (requires Archery at skill level 80+).
- Lightning Shot — energy cost of using ranged weapons is lowered by 10% (requires Archery at skill level 60+).
