The Ancient Stone Beast is a unique boss monster in ADOM. It carries the Chaos Orb of Elemental Earth, which the PC needs in order to complete the game.

Like earth elementals, the Ancient Stone Beast can walk through walls and quickly regenerate. Due to its habit of wandering through walls, the PC will usually encounter it before having to dig all the way into the heart of the temple. In ADOM v. 1.2.0 the ASB is also capable of firing huge rocks as a ranged attack; although this does not seem to be that powerful compared to its melee attack.

The Ancient Stone Beast has a lot of hit points, very high PV, and a strong corrupting melee attack. It tends to be one of the less dangerous bosses in the game to face, though; due to its lack of magical attacks, and its tendency to attack PCs only once per turn (or twice if it berserks). These traits combined with its low DV means that most PCs should have few problems gradually chipping away at its hit points until it is slain. The ASB is vulnerable to demon slayers. The ASB reflects back magic missile and lightning bolt and absorbs other bolt spells, just like Living walls and Wall beasts.

Differently from some other creatures of stone, ASB is not harmed by wand of digging or the Mystic Shovel spell. However, pick axes and the Unpick axe will always score critical hits against it.

Corpse effects[]

As a being of true evil, eating the corpse of the Ancient Stone Beast corrupts (about 2 effects in ADOM v.1.1.1; about 4 effects in 1.2.0). Eating the corpse also increases Strength by 2 and Toughness by 4 in v. 1.2.0. These attribute changes are not capped by potential, nor do they depend on your attribute's current value.

Rather than eat the corpse, non-chaotic PCs that can preserve it long enough to take it to Guth'Alak can exchange the corpse with him for a potion of cure corruption.

Monster memory[]

Buried beneath the roots of the mountains, chaos has awakened this unholy perversion of the elemental powers of earth. To you it appears like a vaguely humanoid shape sculpted in dark stone. Its feet stand within the floor and move inside the ground as it walks, the head does not merely touch the ceiling, it seamlessly connects with the rock above. Cracks widen and narrow as it moves, seemingly slowly, but purposefully and with long strides, ignoring all obstacles between you and it. A crack stretching all around what must be the head opens on one side, showing an array of sharp rocks in several rows. These teeth might not be good for biting, but they probably can grind everything to bits.
