Your character's age affects attributes and can be the cause of death when too old. It increases naturally whenever the in-game time reaches the character's birthday, but usually is unnaturally increased by monsters with aging attacks. Aging can be (partially) reversed by potion of youth, and lifespan can be increased by potion of longevity. Pools can randomly change the unnatural age in any direction.

There are 6 age categories: young, grown-up, middle-aged, old, very old, dead. Change of category results in change of some attributes and speed.

The game starts with some random age, which as well as categories depends on character's race.
